Commissioned for an exhibition about the nature of contemporary labor, and “what artists actually do” at the Atlantic Wharf Gallery in Boston, US. Tools of the Trade featured a rotating display of objects used by artists (from six US states and three countries) in their art making processes, that could not have been identified as a part of their processes by looking at or engaging with their artwork. Objects were displayed alongside the text of interviews I conducted with each artist. The detail shown here is a “Looney Tunes style” black hole used as a symbolic escape hatch during a politically tense social engagement project occurring within prayer rooms at immigration holding areas in international airports.
