An Opportunity

This piece, part sculpture (21" x 21" x 1.125") and part interaction, was created (on request) for a fundraiser and purchased at auction at Art in General in January of 2014.

In addition to purchasing the physical object represented in the image here, the winner of this auction purchased a custom, transferable opportunity. The exact nature of the opportunity is to be determined via an investigative process undertaken by the artist at the convenience of the purchaser. This process includes, but may not be limited to, an interview process and/or the completion of a questionnaire. Delivery of the opportunity itself will be dependent on a number of considerations including the nature of the opportunity, and the ability of the recipient to accept it.

The piece examines the notion of opportunity—a big factor in many career paths. Opportunity, or "a favorable juncture of circumstances," is not supposed to be something that can be brought on by will or construction. But what if it just doesn’t come about naturally? I liked the challenge that making this piece presents me with: to force an opportunity out of thin air.

As of January 2015, the purchaser has requested, but not yet completed the questionnaire shown here.

(Mixed media including plywood, pine, latex paint, wood screws, wood glue, brass doorknocker, personal interaction with artist, writing, paper, electronic communications.)
