20 Questions is a situation-specific performance/engagement piece created for the MEGABUS SOCIAL RESEARCH ARTISTS RETREAT, which took place between January 24-25, 2015 on the Megabus from Boston to Brooklyn and back again, and in Brooklyn at Panoply Performance Laboratory on Saturday January 24th, 2015 from 7pm-midnight.
20 Questions was inspired by two things: a bottle that sat in the center of the room for several hours when PPL came to Boston on November 14, 2014, and the recent rise in mainstream public awareness of the depth and breadth of institutionalized racism in the US since then.
The bottle begged us to play some variety of Spin The Bottle with it but we did not.
The surfacing of indisputable institutionalized racism begs us to look more closely at ourselves as art-practitioners, examining our own culpability in the shaping of our institutions.
I honored the bottle by playing another well known game or two at PPL, and tried to subtly inspect our collective culpability at the same time.
